1. Introduction
=================

Welcome to Jot 1.2!

My primary motivation for writing Jot was to have a place to store
textual information without having to use a database. The Microsoft
Cardfile applet, standard with Windows since day 1, only permits a few
lines of text per card, which is useless for even a simple address book.
Each Jot note can hold up to 64,000 characters of text (with titles 255
characters long), and a single Jot file can store up to 8,000 notes, far
more than Cardfile.

Jot has other great features as well:
* Search and replace.
* Choice of fonts for display and printing.
* Toolbar
* Insert timestamp command to insert the current date and time.
* Right-button context menus.
* Print preview.
* Advanced printing facilities including multiple columns.


2. Installing JOT
===================

Jot 1.2 is available in two editions - 16-bit and 32-bit.

The 16-bit version, JOT120W.ZIP, is for Windows 3.x platforms.

The 32-bit version, JOT120N.ZIP, is for Windows NT 3.51 and Windows95.

a. If you received Jot in a .ZIP file, you must first unpack the file
into a temporary directory/folder of your choice. If you received Jot on
a disk (or it is available over a network), this step is not required.

b. Select the directory/folder the Jot files have been unpacked into.

c. Run the SETUP.EXE application in that directory/folder. Follow the
instructions given.

d. If the installation is successful, there will be a new Program
Manager group or Start folder called 'Jot'.

If you have both Jot 16-bit and 32-bit editions, they can be safely
installed into the same directory.


3. Using JOT
==============

To launch Jot, open the 'Jot' group/folder in Program Manager/Explorer,
and launch the 'Jot 1.2' or 'Jot-NT' item therein.

The first thing Jot does is auto-register itself with Windows, so that
you can double-click '.jot' files in File Manager and they will be
launched with Jot.

A tutorial is available from within the help system - select
'Help|Contents' from the menu.


4. Registering JOT
====================

Jot is NOT free software. You allowed to evaluate the software free of
charge for thirty (30) days. If you continue to use the software after
this point, you MUST register it; failure to do so is a criminal offense
in most locales.

Jot costs £20.00 for a single user license. You can pay by cheque, money
order, credit card, and CompuServe SWREG. Full details are in the help
file.

5. Uninstalling JOT
=====================

On the unlikely event you would want to remove Jot from your system,
choose the 'Uninstall' item from the 'Jot' group/folder in Program
Manager/Explorer. You will be given the opportunity to choose which
parts of the Jot installation to remove.

For the 16-bit version of Jot, you may also want to remove the
UNICORN.INI configuration file from the Windows directory. The 32-bit
version of Jot uses the Registry to store configuration data; consult
the Jot help file's Reference section (before you uninstall) for further
details.

6. Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP)
=================================================
This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
